UberX Teen – Ridesharing App

The Uber app has over 5 million downloads on the Apple store, yet this new addition to their service line will make their ridesharing services available to even more people!

What Is UberX Teen?

Uber has introduced a new ride type called UberX Teen, allowing minors to take an Uber ride without needing an adult to accompany them.

With UberX Teen, teenagers aged 13–17 can now request a ride using their own Uber account after being added to a family profile by their parent or guardian. Parents and guardians will receive real-time updates about the ride, while teens will have access to multiple safety features.

What Parents Should Know About UberX Teen Ridesharing

Previously, unaccompanied minors were not allowed to use Uber under any circumstances. However, when using the UberX Teen app, teenagers will now have the freedom from the company to travel independently. It is important to note that UberX Teen is only available in certain cities. If unavailable in your town, minors will still be prohibited from riding without an adult.

Unaccompanied teenagers can independently request an Uber ride after being added to a family profile by a parent or guardian. Payment for the rides is made using the parent or guardian’s payment method, eliminating teens needing to handle any transactions. Parents and guardians can stay informed about the passage through real-time location tracking and pickup/drop-off notifications.

Teen riders can bring other passengers if the additional riders are 13 or older. Uber states that these different riders must have permission from their parent or guardian to ride, though it is not specified how this permission should be demonstrated.

Safety Features of UberX Teen Ridesharing

Parents can receive notifications when a ride is requested and pickup and drop-off notifications. It is possible to track the ride in real-time to know the car’s exact location. Contact and communication with the driver both happen directly through the Uber app.

Every ride includes PIN verification and RideCheck features. Emergency access can be achieved through the Uber safety line or 911. Additionally, teens can choose to enable in-ride audio recording for added security.

Our Recommendation

UberX Teen Ridesharing aims to provide a safe and convenient option for teenagers to travel independently while allowing parents and guardians to stay connected and ensure their child’s well-being. The problem for many parents is the question of whether or not a company can provide a genuinely reliable transportation option.

If your family decides ridesharing is appropriate for your teen, we suggest establishing a robust and transparent communication foundation. You will no doubt need to rely on your teen to use their better judgment in situations involving strangers and their safety.

For families that have decided against ridesharing for their teen, there are many ways to plan transportation that may involve trusted family or friends, for example. While some inconveniences may exist this way, increasing their safety while maintaining an option that works for you is possible.
