These apps pose significant threats, particularly to teenagers, who often become unsuspecting victims of this malicious technology. For instance, Francesca Mani, a 14-year-old student at Westfield High School in New Jersey, learned this firsthand. Last October, while sitting in her history class, she heard a rumor that some boys had naked photos of female classmates. Moments later, her name was called over the loudspeaker. At the principal’s office, she discovered that a photo of her had been manipulated into a nude image using AI. Mani had never heard of a “nudify” app before. Leaving the principal’s office, she saw boys laughing while several girls were crying. “And that’s when I realized I should stop crying and that I should be mad, because this is unacceptable,” she said. Francesca’s experience highlights the troubling trend of how AI-powered tools can be weaponized to harm students, especially girls.

Cases like hers underscore the need for parents to recognize the psychological and social repercussions of such incidents and advocate for stronger protective measures, such as stricter privacy settings on social media platforms, school-led initiatives to educate students on online safety, and collaboration with law enforcement to track and address malicious content.
